At A Little Bee-Hind, we believe some of the best lessons in beekeeping come from slowing down, paying attention, and learning from the bees themselves. Our apiary was born from a desire to care for honey bees in a way that honors their natural behaviors, supports their role in the environment, and fosters a deeper connection to the rhythms of the natural world.
Nestled in the foothills of East Tennessee and serving Maryville, Blount County, Monroe County, and beyond, we are committed to raising healthy bees, sharing practical knowledge, and promoting thoughtful stewardship. Everything we do is guided by the belief that successful beekeeping begins not with control, but with understanding.
A Little Bee-Hind was founded from a deep appreciation for honey bees, the natural world, and the lessons both have to teach. What began as a curiosity about beekeeping soon grew into a passion for understanding the complex and remarkable lives of honey bee colonies.
Our journey led us toward a more natural and mindful approach to beekeeping, one rooted in observation, stewardship, and respect for the biology of the hive. Rather than viewing bees simply as producers of honey, we strive to understand them as an essential part of a larger ecosystem and as teachers of patience, resilience, cooperation, and adaptation.
Inspired by both traditional beekeeping wisdom and modern research, we seek to work with the colony rather than against it whenever possible. This philosophy encourages us to pay attention to seasonal rhythms, forage availability, colony behavior, and the natural instincts that have allowed honey bees to thrive for generations.
Today, A Little Bee-Hind is dedicated not only to raising healthy bees, but also to sharing knowledge, supporting pollinator awareness, and helping others develop a deeper appreciation for the vital role honey bees play in our environment. Through education, observation, and continuous learning, we hope to inspire thoughtful stewardship and a lasting connection to the natural world.
At A Little Bee-Hind, sustainability is more than a practice, it is a responsibility. Every decision we make is guided by a commitment to supporting healthy honey bee colonies, protecting pollinator habitat, and fostering a deeper connection between people and the natural world.
We believe that thoughtful beekeeping begins with stewardship. Through careful hive management, respect for seasonal rhythms, support for diverse forage, and environmentally conscious practices, we strive to create conditions that help both managed honey bees and local pollinators thrive.
Our commitment extends beyond the apiary. We are passionate about sharing knowledge, encouraging pollinator-friendly landscapes, and helping our community better understand the vital role bees play in healthy ecosystems and food production.
By choosing A Little Bee-Hind, you are supporting a locally rooted apiary that values education, sustainability, and mindful beekeeping. Together, we can help cultivate healthier pollinator populations, stronger communities, and a greater appreciation for the interconnected world we all share.
A Little Bee-Hind began in April 2020 as a family hobby on our 11-acre homestead nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near the Little Tennessee River in East Tennessee. What started with just two honey bee colonies in the front yard soon grew into something far greater than we ever anticipated.
At first, we were simply learning how to keep bees. Over time, we realized the bees were teaching us far more than we could ever teach them. Through their seasonal rhythms, remarkable cooperation, and quiet resilience, they revealed a deeper connection to the natural world and helped us slow down long enough to notice it.
Our first two colonies were locally mated Carniolan/Italian nucs from Sevierly Buzzed Honey, a respected apiary in neighboring Sevier County. Since 2013, they have focused on selecting bees with traits well-suited to life in East Tennessee, including winter hardiness, gentle temperaments, productive honey stores, and resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
Those original queens and their descendants have continued to adapt to the unique conditions of our region. Shaped by the seasons, forage, weather, and landscape of East Tennessee, they have become a lineage rooted in the hills and hollers we call home.
What began as a hobby soon became a passion for understanding honey bees, supporting pollinators, and sharing what we continue to learn along the way. Today, A Little Bee-Hind remains grounded in the same values that inspired those first two colonies; curiosity, stewardship, lifelong learning, and a deep respect for the remarkable wisdom of the hive.
At A Little Bee-Hind, we strive to live in mindful partnership with honey bees and the natural world that sustains them. Nestled in the foothills of East Tennessee, our apiary is guided by principles of stewardship, sustainability, observation, and respect for the remarkable wisdom of the hive.
We care for our colonies with the understanding that beekeeping is a relationship rather than a transaction. By paying attention to seasonal rhythms, supporting healthy forage, and working with the natural behaviors of the colony whenever possible, we seek to create conditions that allow both bees and beekeepers to flourish.
When gathering from the apiary, we are inspired by the principles of the Honorable Harvest; taking only what is freely given, expressing gratitude for nature's abundance, and always leaving enough behind for the bees and the ecosystem that supports them. We believe that true stewardship requires balance, humility, and an appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living things.
Through our apiary, we are honored to share the gifts of the hive with our community. This includes locally adapted queens, healthy honey bee colonies, pure raw honey, apitherapy products, and educational resources designed to encourage curiosity, support lifelong learning, and foster a deeper appreciation for pollinators and the natural world.
Everything we offer is shared with intention, gratitude, and care; guided by the belief that healthy bees, healthy landscapes, and informed communities are all connected.
What began as a curiosity about beekeeping has become something much more; a journey of learning, stewardship, and reconnection with the natural world.
Through the seasonal rhythms of the hive, we have learned to slow down, pay attention, and be fully present. The bees ask us to observe before acting, to listen before intervening, and to appreciate that not every lesson arrives in a hurry. In a world that often moves too fast, the hive reminds us that some of the most important things in life unfold in their own time.
The bees have revealed a part of life that many of us have forgotten; a quieter wisdom rooted in patience, cooperation, resilience, and an intimate connection to the land. They have taught us to notice the changing seasons, the first blooms of spring, the abundance of summer, and the preparations required for winter. In doing so, they have helped us cultivate a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living things.
Perhaps most importantly, they have reminded us that the extraordinary is often found within the ordinary. The hum of a healthy colony, the return of a pollen-laden forager, the emergence of a new queen; each offers a glimpse into the wonder that surrounds us every day.
It is this experience; a return to presence, purpose, and a deeper relationship with the natural world; that we hope to share with others. Whether through the bees we raise, the products we offer, or the knowledge we pass along, our hope is to inspire a greater appreciation for honey bees, pollinators, and the remarkable lessons they continue to teach us.
Honey bees have been solving problems long before beekeepers arrived. For millions of years, they have adapted to changing seasons, shifting landscapes, environmental challenges, and the countless demands of colony life. While thoughtful management has its place, some of the most valuable lessons in beekeeping come from simply observing how healthy colonies function and learning from the wisdom they have refined over generations.
Our approach is rooted in observation before intervention. We strive to understand how bees naturally regulate their environment, rear brood, gather and store resources, communicate, reproduce, and respond to the changing conditions around them. Rather than forcing colonies to fit our expectations, we seek to better understand what the bees are telling us and support conditions that help them thrive.
This philosophy emphasizes strong local genetics, diverse and nutritious forage, healthy habitat, practical hive management, and a deep respect for the natural behaviors of the colony. We believe that healthy bees begin with healthy environments and that successful beekeeping is built upon stewardship, patience, and continuous learning.
Beekeeping is both a science and an art. It requires curiosity, humility, and a willingness to remain a student of the hive. The information shared throughout this website reflects personal experience, ongoing research, lessons learned from respected beekeepers and researchers, and the understanding that there is always more to learn.
Above all, we believe the bees are among our greatest teachers. The more carefully we observe them, the more they reveal about resilience, cooperation, adaptation, and our connection to the natural world.
The more time we spend with honey bees, the more we are reminded that healthy ecosystems, thriving pollinators, and resilient communities are deeply connected. Our hope is that A Little Bee-Hind serves not only as an apiary, but as a place to learn, ask questions, share experiences, and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the remarkable lives of honey bees.
Thank you for visiting our little corner of East Tennessee. We invite you to slow down, stay curious, and continue learning alongside the bees.
