Nucleus Colonies (Nucs)

Our nucleus colonies are locally raised in East Tennessee and thoughtfully assembled to provide a strong foundation for colony success. Each nuc includes a healthy laying queen, developing brood in multiple stages, worker bees, and food reserves that allow the colony to continue growing immediately after installation.

Because nucs are already functioning colonies, they often establish more quickly and experience less stress than packaged bees.

Why Choose Our Nucs?

• Locally adapted East Tennessee bees

• Healthy laying queen

• Established brood pattern

• Reduced stress compared to shipped packages

• Ideal for both new and experienced beekeepers

• Seasonal availability aligned with natural colony buildup

Pickup is arranged locally near Andersonville, Tennessee to minimize disruption and support a smooth transition into your apiary.

Queen Bees & Local Genetics

Our queens are open-mated in the foothills and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains near the Clinch River. These queens and their descendants are shaped by the forage, climate, seasons, and environmental conditions of East Tennessee.

We thoughtfully select breeding colonies based on qualities that are important to both bees and beekeepers, including:

• Gentle temperaments

• Strong brood patterns

• Honey production

• Winter survivability

• Adaptability to local conditions

Why Buy Local Bees?

Honey bees raised within the region are already familiar with the nectar flows, weather patterns, humidity, and seasonal challenges they will encounter throughout the year. Local bees often establish more quickly, experience less transportation stress, and are better positioned to thrive within the environment they call home.

Like the bees themselves, our breeding philosophy is guided by patience, observation, and a commitment to raising resilient colonies rooted in the hills and hollers of East Tennessee.

Queen Bees

~Currently Unavailable~

Our queens are what we affectionately call an East Tennessee Mutt; a locally adapted Carniolan and Italian cross shaped by the unique landscapes, forage, weather patterns, and seasonal rhythms of East Tennessee.

Raised and open-mated in the foothills and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains near the Clinch River, these queens represent generations of bees adapting to the hills, hollers, and changing seasons we call home. The result is a diverse, resilient queen selected not only for productivity, but also for gentle temperament, healthy brood patterns, and the ability to thrive in our regional environment.

Raised with Respect for the Queen's Natural Journey

At A Little Bee-Hind, we believe some of the strongest queens emerge when given the opportunity to follow their natural developmental process with as little disruption as possible.

To help reduce stress and support natural colony development, we do not utilize queen banks or routinely interrupt the queen's emergence, mating flights, or establishment within her colony. Each queen remains with the colony in which she emerged until she has successfully mated and demonstrated her quality as a laying queen.

By allowing queens to complete this important stage of development naturally, we gain valuable insight into their performance while minimizing unnecessary disruption to their reproductive cycle.

To further reduce stress, queens are typically caged only on the day of their scheduled pickup.

~Currently Unavailable~

Raised in the foothills and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains near the Clinch River in Andersonville, Tennessee, our nucleus colonies are built from healthy, locally adapted bees selected for their ability to thrive within the unique conditions of East Tennessee.

Each nuc represents more than a collection of frames—it is a functioning young colony with an established queen, developing brood, active worker bees, and the momentum needed to continue growing after installation.

Each Nuc Includes

• A locally open-mated East Tennessee Mutt queen

• 2–3 frames of brood in various stages of development

• 1–2 frames containing honey, pollen, and active worker bees

• A healthy, established colony ready for transfer into your equipment

Our queens are naturally mated within the local environment, producing bees shaped by the forage, climate, seasons, and landscapes of East Tennessee. Because these bees are raised where they live, they arrive without the stresses associated with long-distance shipping and are already adapted to the region they call home.

Why Choose a Nuc?

For many beekeepers, a nuc offers one of the most successful ways to begin or expand an apiary. Unlike packaged bees, a nucleus colony already contains an established queen, developing brood, and a cohesive workforce actively caring for the colony.

Nucs are ideal for:

• New beekeepers starting their first hive

• Experienced beekeepers expanding their apiary

• Replacing winter losses

• Building colony numbers naturally
