Coming Out of the Sturgeon Moon and Beginning the Long Preparation for Winter
September arrives quietly in the East Tennessee apiary. Only a few nights ago, the Full Sturgeon Moon illuminated the final days of August. Its familiar name comes from the seasonal importance of lake sturgeon around the Great Lakes, where these ancient fish were traditionally an important resource during late summer. Other traditions have called this moon the Grain Moon or Corn Moon names that, in different ways, recognize a landscape moving from summer abundance toward harvest and preparation.
There is no good scientific evidence that the full moon itself directs honey bee colonies through their seasonal transition. But as a marker of time, it offers us a beautiful opportunity to notice what is changing.
The days are shortening. Morning temperatures are beginning to soften. Summer flowers are fading. Goldenrod and asters are taking their place. And inside the hive, one of the most important transitions of the entire beekeeping year is beginning. September is not simply the end of summer. For the bees, it is part of the beginning of winter.
Flora Watch — September in East Tennessee
Across East Tennessee, the landscape changes considerably with elevation, rainfall, soil, and local habitat. By September, sourwood has largely finished. Clover may continue in cooler or higher-elevation areas, while many of our most recognizable late-season plants move into bloom.
Watch for:
Goldenrod
Asters
Ironweed
Joe-Pye weed
Wingstem
Horseweed
Late clover where conditions allow
Remaining summer wildflowers
Other locally abundant fall-blooming plants
Goldenrod and asters deserve special attention. Research examining honey bee forage consistently identifies goldenrod and members of the aster family as important late-season resources, providing pollen if weather and soil moisture cooperate, nectar during a period when many earlier blooms have disappeared. This matters because September pollen is not merely evidence that the bees are still busy. It is part of the nutritional landscape supporting the colony as it prepares for winter.
The Fall Flow Is Local
One of the easiest mistakes for a new beekeeper is assuming that because goldenrod is blooming, every colony is experiencing a strong nectar flow. Flowers do not guarantee nectar. Temperature, rainfall, soil moisture, plant species, elevation, and local weather can all influence nectar secretion and bee visitation. Two apiaries only a few miles apart can experience very different September conditions. That is why we watch the bees rather than simply watching the calendar.
Look for:
Pollen entering the hive
Increased or decreasing hive weight
Fresh nectar around the brood nest
Goldenrod, asters, ironweed, and other fall blooms nearby
Changes in foraging intensity
Robbing behavior
Colony population and brood area
Remaining honey stores
A busy entrance does not necessarily mean the pantry is filling. Pollen may still be abundant while nectar is scarce.
Why Late-Season Flowers Matter
Late-blooming plants are valuable to much more than managed honey bees. Goldenrods, asters, ironweed, Joe-Pye weed, and other autumn flowers support a broad community of native bees, butterflies, flies, beetles, and other insects at a time when floral diversity is beginning to decline. Peer-reviewed research has shown that landscapes containing diverse late-season flowering plants can help buffer seasonal forage shortages for honey bees.
For those managing land for pollinators, September offers another lesson. Do not be too quick to make everything tidy. A patch of goldenrod along a fence row may look untamed to us. To a pollinator, it may be dinner. Allowing appropriate native plants to flower, reducing unnecessary mowing during bloom, and maintaining diverse forage throughout the growing season can make our landscapes more useful to both managed and native pollinators. Sometimes stewardship begins by deciding what not to cut.
September's Most Important Bees May Be the Ones We Have Not Met Yet
Inside the colony, another transition is underway. As autumn approaches, colonies begin producing workers physiologically suited to survive much longer than typical summer bees. We call them winter bees.
Unlike summer workers whose lives may be measured in weeks, winter bees are adapted to survive for months. Their physiology, nutritional reserves, and longevity help sustain the colony through winter and support brood rearing when the cycle begins again. This changes how we should think about September.
The health of the colony today helps determine the quality of the bees carrying it through winter. September management is therefore not simply preparation for cold weather. It is preparation for the bees that must survive it.
Varroa: Observe, Measure, Then Act
This is one of the most important times of year to understand what is happening with Varroa. Research has shown that high Varroa infestation during the period when winter bees are developing can shorten worker lifespan and reduce a colony's probability of surviving winter. That makes late-summer and early-fall mite levels particularly important. Rather than treating by habit or ignoring mites in the name of natural beekeeping: Measure first.
Consider:
Conducting a reliable mite assessment (Alcohol or soap wash)
Recording the result for each colony
Considering colony strength and brood conditions
Intervening when mite pressure warrants it
Using only evidence-based, legally approved methods according to their labels, we prefer Apiguard in the fall
An alcohol wash generally provides a more reliable quantitative estimate than simply watching natural mite fall. Other monitoring approaches can still provide useful information when their limitations are understood.
Our philosophy remains: Observation before intervention. But observation must occasionally lead to intervention when the health of the colony requires it. Natural-minded beekeeping should never mean allowing preventable suffering simply because intervention feels unnatural.
Stewardship asks something harder of us. To learn enough to recognize when restraint is appropriate and when help is necessary.
Winter Stores: Weigh the Hive, Not the Calendar
September is also the time to honestly evaluate food reserves. A traditional Tennessee guideline is roughly 40–60 pounds of stored honey for overwintering, but that should be treated as a regional starting point rather than a guarantee.
Winter consumption depends on several conditions:
Colony population
Hive configuration
Local climate
Duration of winter
Fall and winter brood rearing
Genetics
Available forage
Weather patterns
Instead of relying on a number alone:
Evaluate colony weight
Examine the location of stores relative to the brood nest
Watch whether fall nectar is actually being stored
Compare strong colonies with lighter colonies
Supplement only when observations indicate the colony cannot meet its needs
The goal is not to fill every available box. The goal is to ensure the bees have what they need.
Super & Honey Management
As the primary harvest season winds down:
☐ Remove genuinely surplus honey
☐ Leave adequate stores for the colony
☐ Consolidate partially filled equipment when appropriate
☐ Remove unnecessary empty supers
☐ Return wet extracted supers near dusk to reduce robbing pressure
☐ Store drawn comb dry and protected from wax moths and rodents
☐ Retire badly damaged, contaminated, or excessively old comb as part of a thoughtful comb-replacement program
September is also an excellent time to inspect unused equipment. Repair cracked boxes. Replace failing hardware. Scrape excessive wax and propolis only where it interferes with equipment function. Paint exposed wooden surfaces when needed. Then store everything clean, dry, and protected until the bees need it again. Maintenance performed now becomes one less hurried task next spring.
Queen & Colony Assessment
Rather than requeening simply because the calendar says September, evaluate the colony in front of you.
Ask:
☐ Is the brood pattern appropriate for the season?
☐ Is the queen still laying?
☐ Is the population strong enough for winter?
☐ Is the colony chronically defensive or poorly performing?
☐ Was a recent queen introduction accepted?
☐ Is a weak colony realistically capable of becoming winter ready?
Late requeening can sometimes be appropriate, but queen availability, acceptance, weather, drone availability for naturally mated replacements, and colony condition all matter. A weak colony is not automatically a failed colony. But neither is every colony best served by being carried into winter alone. Sometimes thoughtful consolidation is the more responsible choice.
Robbing Season Requires Awareness
As nectar becomes scarce, colonies become increasingly interested in resources belonging to their neighbors.
Watch for:
Fighting at entrances
Bees searching cracks and seams
Frantic sideways flight around another colony
Wax debris accumulating near entrances
Sudden unusual activity at a weak hive
During a dearth:
Keep inspections purposeful
Avoid leaving honey exposed
Reduce entrances when colony strength warrants it. Clean honey spills promptly. And avoid creating opportunities for one colony's scarcity to become another colony's disaster.
Record What the Land Is Saying
September observations are incredibly useful from year to year.
Record:
☐ First significant goldenrod bloom
☐ Aster and ironweed bloom
☐ Pollen colors and volume
☐ Colony weights or heft estimates
☐ Nectar entering the hive
☐ Brood area
☐ Queen performance
☐ Varroa counts
☐ Honey remaining
☐ Feeding, if required
☐ Robbing behavior
☐ Rainfall and prolonged dry periods
Coming Out of the Sturgeon Moon
The Sturgeon Moon has begun to wane, and so too does the abundance of summer. There is no mystical switch inside the hive triggered by the moon. The science points instead toward a remarkable collection of signals working together:
Day length
Temperature
Floral availability
Nutrition
Colony demography
Parasite pressure
Weather
Time
The bees respond to all of them. And perhaps that makes the seasonal transition even more extraordinary. September reminds us that winter preparation does not begin when frost appears on the landing board. It begins while goldenrod is still yellow. It begins while asters are still blooming. It begins while pollen is still coming through the entrance. It begins with the generation of bees that will carry the colony through the cold months and into another spring.

And above all, continue learning to read the landscape alongside the bees. The land is changing. The colony is preparing. Winter is still months away, but its story is already being written. Observation before intervention. Stewardship before harvest. The bees set the pace.
